For small and mid-sized businesses in Bulgaria, 2026 has been an unusually demanding year for IT. The switch to the euro, new cybersecurity rules, new AI rules and the end of Windows 10 all arrived within a few months of each other. A good IT partner turns these changes into one clear plan instead of a series of emergencies. Here is how IT consulting can help.

1. Getting Systems Right After the Euro Changeover
Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026 at the fixed rate of 1.95583 leva per euro, and mandatory dual pricing ended on 8 August 2026. Most companies switched their systems quickly, but many still have leftovers: old price lists, reports that mix currencies, integrations that were patched in a hurry, and historical data that is hard to compare.

Example Solution:
A review of your ERP, accounting and e-commerce setup (currency settings, price lists, reports and integrations), followed by automation of invoicing and reporting in euro.

2. Meeting the New Cybersecurity Requirements (NIS2)
Bulgaria’s amended Cybersecurity Act, published on 13 February 2026, applies to medium and large companies in 18 sectors. It requires a 24-hour early warning and a 72-hour notification for significant incidents, makes management personally responsible, and sets fines of up to EUR 10 million or 2% of global turnover. Smaller companies are affected too, because their customers must now check the security of their suppliers.

Example Solution:
A gap assessment against NIS2, followed by the essentials: MFA everywhere, tested backups, logging and monitoring, written policies and an incident response plan.

3. Adopting AI Safely and Legally
AI tools can save real time on documents, customer support and data analysis. The EU AI Act also sets the rules of the game. Since 2 August 2026, chatbots must tell users they are talking to an AI and deepfakes must be disclosed, while companies using AI are expected to support AI literacy among their staff. The obligations for high-risk AI systems were postponed to December 2027.

Example Solution:
An AI usage policy, a short list of approved tools, staff training, and a pilot that automates one real business process before scaling.

4. Modernising the Workplace
Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025, so computers that still run it no longer receive regular security updates. This is a good moment to review the whole workplace setup: devices, Microsoft 365 licences, device management and backups.

Example Solution:
An inventory of devices and licences, a plan to upgrade or replace outdated machines, and central management of updates and security settings.

5. Funding Digital Projects
EU co-funded programmes regularly support innovation and digitalisation in companies, including software development, automation and AI. IT Engineering is itself a partner in such a project under the programme “Competitiveness and Innovation in Enterprises” 2021–2027. A consultant can help define the technical scope of a project and then deliver it.

Example Solution:
Support in preparing the technical part of a project proposal, followed by implementation, documentation and reporting.
